Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a clamor to include fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
